My story started from a boy, Alexius. I was a very shy
girl and wouldn’t say a word unless necessary. He, on the other hand, was the
class clown and very hyper.
On the first
day of school, the class teacher arranged for him to sit beside me. Without any
formal introductions first, let alone casually mentioning our names, he started
talking to me about nonsensical stuff. Days passed and he picked up the courage
to annoy me. First, he nicknamed me as “baby hippo”, and I was not even fat! Then,
he wrote me phony love letters and forged the principal’s signature on it.
Little did I
know that every annoying move he made was a declaration of his love for me and
eventually…I, too, fell in love with him. After a month or so, we started going
out and had since dated for about a year.

One day, Alexius told me he would be moving to another
school! It was a last-minute thing as his parents wished for him to study at a
well-known school. Not that our school was not well-known, but I preferred to
think of it more as ‘humble’. What made me worry was that his ex-girlfriend, a
beauty queen of her age and still totally in love with him, happened to be in
that very same school! As I was trying to download this disturbing information
into my memory, Alexius seemed to have read my mind and reassured me that I was
the only one for him. He kissed my forehead, bade me Goodbye and went on his
way.
Back at my
home, I opened my bag and saw a pink envelope. Pink is my favorite color and he
knew that very well. I tore it open and inside was a note that read:
Dear Evelyn,
This will not
be the last you see or hear of me. I will still text you as per usual. I’m
really excited to go to my new school even though I know I will miss my buddies
and especially you. I hope we will get to see each other every day but weekends
are just as fine. You will always be in my prayers. Don’t be a stranger!
Sincerely from Alexius.

Not long after that since he moved to his new school, I
broke up with him nonchalantly. No words could describe exactly why I did that.
I still loved him but, maybe just texting and weekend meetings weren’t good
enough for me. I was also worried that maybe I was playing second fiddle to his
ex-girlfriend, since they could meet more often than Alexius and I do.
With no
distractions, I concentrated more on studies and was soon passing exams with
flying colors. Upon graduation, I got many offers from many universities. I was
pretty much a big deal.
Looking back,
I was so happy with what I had achieved for myself. I would get a good job with
a good pay and would take good care of my parents. And then my eyes opened, my
parents had me to take care of them, but what about me when I grow old? Yes, I
needed a job, but I also needed a loving husband and a family of my own.

One day, as I was taking a casual stroll downtown, I
met up with an accident. It happened at the corner of a street. People call it
the “Blind Corner”, because one couldn’t see what was up ahead. What happened
was that two teenagers on a bike had been speeding when they crashed into me.
It was a blackout after that.
I woke up in a
hospital bed with a doctor and my parents by my bedside. The doctor told me the
two teens escaped with minor injuries because they were wearing helmets. I was
also quite lucky enough to have lost a lot of blood and still live. But, there
was a catch: the doctor told me that the impact inflicted on my brain had
caused me to lose my voice. Listening to my parents’ comforting voice, but with
nothing coming out of my mouth, I broke down in tears. I felt as if the world
came crashing down all together at the same time and that Fate was indeed one
cruel, cruel mistress.
Days passed
and I learned to stand on my own two feet again. I took up sign language and
tried my best to learn to communicate with the deaf and the dumb. But even as I
learned new things and made new friends, I had always prayed to God that He
would send someone to enter into my life soon and never leave my side, while
considering the state I was in.
***************************************************************************
One day after
so many years, I was walking down the street when I bumped into a familiar
looking stranger. He looked straight into my eyes and suddenly, he hugged me,
saying over and over again. “It really is you! It really is you!” Shocked, I
struggled within his grasp and demanded to know what his sudden outburst is all
about. He smiled at me and briefly said, “I’m Alexius.” As I was still
processing this moment of the finding of a long lost ‘friend’, he gave me a
pink envelope. With trembling hands, I opened the envelope and inside was
non-other than a weirdly faded wedding invitation. I couldn’t believe that he
was actually getting married. I forced a smile. I had a mixture of
disappointment and guilt within me. With the worst premonition, I
opened the letter and inside read:
Alexius and Evelyn
Forever Love
I was numb. He hugged me and said “Sorry it took so
long. I spent a year’s time learning sign language. Just to let you know that I've not
forgotten about you. Let me have the chance to be your voice”.
I was touched but still didn’t understand and pointed at the card with a
questioning look. It was as if he had never changed, he seemed to have read my
mind and said, “I made that card a long time ago. After we broke up, I prayed
to God that one day, we might be together again and I stuffed the card into my
coat pocket and it was left there long and forgotten. This morning, as I was
getting dressed, my window blew open and I figured today will be a cold day, so
I went in search of a coat, wore it and came upon this card. Then I felt like I
was being led here and when I saw you I was pretty sure God had made everything
happen this way.”
I
couldn’t believe what I heard; it was like music to my ears. “So,” Alexius
knelt down in front of public eye and asked in a loud, clear voice over the
sound of the traffic, “Will You Marry Me?” I nodded and he picked me up and
kissed my lips.
