PT3 Composition - A Hit and Run Accident

Question: Write a recount of a hit-and-run accident and suggest what the hit-and-run driver should do.

One night, I was walking home from my tuition class. The usual route I took was lined with serried ranks of shops.  The halos of street lights brightened the darkness around me. There were not many pedestrians along the road.

While turning a bend, the frail figure of an old woman caught my eye. She was bending over a rubbish cart by the roadside, rummaging through its contents.  A feeling of pity welled up within me. I wondered why her family let her scavenge at this hour.  She should have rested at home and enjoyed the warmth of her family.  Did poverty compel her to do such a thing?

My thoughts were interrupted by the roar of an engine that came from behind me.  I turned round and to my shock and horror, saw a car zooming towards the old woman. What made it stray to the roadside?  Judging from the erratic pattern of the driving, the driver must have been drunk.  I wanted to shout a warning but all that came out was a faint squeal.

What happened next practically curdled my blood.  The car knocked down the old woman and tipped over the rubbish cart, spilling the rubbish.  It chugged to a stop, showing that the driver had realized the severity of his action. I thought he would come out of his car but he engaged the gears and sped off into the distance, leaving me in stunned disbelief.

The poor old woman lay unconscious on the road.  Blood gushed out from the wound in her head and my visceral reaction was to take off my T-shirt and wrap it around her head to stem the bleeding. A small crowd of pedestrians and motorists had gathered to rubberneck at the old woman. I called an ambulance and thank goodness, it arrived in ten minutes and took the old woman to hospital.  The crowd dispersed almost immediately and I overheard some people trying to interpret the accident into a four-digit lottery number.

Dressed only in a singlet, I continued my way home."God, have mercy on the old woman," I prayed in my heart. "Please arouse the conscience in the hit-and-run driver's heart and make him give himself up to the police."

As the culprit of the accident, the hit-and-run driver should have stopped his car and called the ambulance.  To atone for his action, he should try his best to contact the family members of the old woman and apologize.  Most importantly, he should not have driven under the influence of alcohol.  His act of fleeing the scene is against the law and if he were caught by the police, he would be dealt with severely.
