Graduation Speech
I wrote a graduation speech for a parent.
Good morning, everyone. Graduation season is once again upon us. It is a meaningful moment that signifies the accomplishment of one’s academic life at school. To all the Form Five graduates, my hearty congratulations to you on a job well done.
Five years ago, on your first day at SMK St. Joseph, you faced the startling newness of life as a secondary school student. Together, you went through orientation week, learning the do’s and don’ts of school rules. School life was saturated with countless explorations. Everything was a blur from the get-go. As you progressed, you found yourself grappling with a motley assortment of things: homework, projects, experiments, presentations, club meetings, competitions and -- exams. Despite feeling swamped, you braved through each trial and became more enlightened in the process. Now, those five years are almost over and you find yourselves light-years away from that first day you entered the school. You are taller, more mature and able to see things with a more critical mind. The challenges of an active, task-oriented school life have made you more independent and self-sufficient. You are enjoying the rewards from an all-around system of education.
Dear students, please bear in mind that your success is also your teachers and parents’ success. For they have given you the freedom to dare, the courage to excel and the belief that you can achieve your best. Without them, you would not be what you are today. Therefore, you must strive to do the best you can in the forthcoming SPM examinations. Live the life of unimpeachable rectitude and integrity. A student’s achievements are incomplete if he excels only in academics and co-curricular activities. He should also be outstanding in character.
Together, for the last time, you stand poised at the edge of graduation, looking towards a bright future. Soon, every one of you will go forth, each on his or her own path, seeking to make a mark on the world. Your adulthood, so long anticipated, is here at last. You must seize the future, and take it into your own hands. And always strive for excellence to the best of your ability.
Thank you.
