Robert Raymer's Writing Workshop in Kuching

This year, I attended a total of three Robert Raymer's writing workshops in Sabah. When I learnt that there would be one more workshop of his in Kuching,I submitted my name to him via email without a hitch. Several hours later, he emailed me his telephone number, asking me to talk about my accommodation with him on the phone. I contacted him straight away. When I told him that I would be arriving at Kuching at night, he offered to pick me up at the airport and put me up at his house. For the sake of convenience, I agreed. I hadn't made any room reservation yet.

My flight to Kuching was delayed and I arrived at Kuching late. I was so guilty to have kept Robert Raymer waiting. He said it was alright good-naturedly. I slept rather late at his house that night because I had some school work to do. After finishing my work, I drifted into a deep sleep and woke up refreshed the next morning. Robert prepared a simple but delicious breakfast for me -- cheese omelet and orange juice. I felt so guilty for troubling him. I also felt bad for not being able to say thanks to his wife personally because I woke up late.

Not wishing to inconvenience Robert any more, I decided to take a bus to town and look for a place to stay. Robert Raymer took me to a bus stop and I was in time to catch a bus. I thanked Robert for having been so helpful and generous to me.

The bus ride took me twenty-five minutes to reach town. Then, I asked a cabbie to take me to any budget hotel which he thought clean and safe enough. He took me to many hotels but I did not like any of them. I eventually chose one which was of a good distance from the dins of traffic and music lounges. I slept well that night.

The next day, I took a taxi to the venue of the writing workshop, Open University learning Centre at 91/2 mile. I reached the place a little late but the workshop hadn't begun. I got an opportunity to meet Robert Raymer's wife whose job was to collect the registration fee from participants. I thanked her for what she and her husband had done for me.

There were only six participants in the morning session. And the things Robert went through with us were more or less the same as the ones in KK. Hence, I was able to gain a better understanding of every thing. Compared to the past, I could write much faster with less cancellations. I followed every step spelt out by the writer and was able to finish a story at the end of the workshop. The title of the story was 'Lost In Hangzhou'.I had a rich sense of fulfillment.

Before I left, I passed Robert Raymer a story I had written several months before for editing. He agreed to go through it and I was in cloud nine. I am really passionate about improving my writing.

I flew back to Miri the next afternoon. The benefits I reaped were a lot.
