Three Dishes

I have cooked three dishes over the course of three weeks. They are:

1. Steamed Cake
2. Pork Adobo
3. Kari kapitan

One quiet night three weeks ago, I felt peckish and decided to make pancakes. Halfway whisking, I changed my mind and whisked harder. My brutish strength resulted in an airy batter and I poured it into a greased cake tin. After fifteen minutes, the cake was done and I was surprised by how light and well-risen it was. I ate two slices and brought the rest to school the next day.

I dined at a Filipino restaurant(Fiesta FIlipina) one Thursday, and was thrilled by how similar Pork Adobo was to Chinese braised pork. It was appetizingly tangy with the use of vinegar. I googled its recipe and found it very easy to cook. I tweaked the recipe a little, adding some ginger to get rid of unpleasant porcine odour. The one that I had eaten at the restaurant did smell a little. The use of ginger would make it more palatable. For good measure I added rice wine to enrich the taste. The result was excellent, eliciting praise from my parents.

A few days ago I watched an AFC programme on how to cook Kari Kapitan. Its reddish colour made me salivate and I cooked it the next day. I blended all the spices and sauteed them over slow fire. My house was filled with a heady spicy aroma and my neighbour inquired what I was cooking. In the evening, I took it to my parents' house and they enjoyed it to bits. I was very pleased with myself.

Given that I have lots of free time during the holidays, I will try out more recipes.

Ahhhh!!! I went to that Filipino restaurant when I was in Miri! Your steamed cake reminds me of the ones my mum used to make - gee!!! I have not had that for a long long long time. Wish I could try some of yours.
