                                           A MIRACLE

Life had never been good to me since I was born. I was an unwanted child, a little girl who was brought to the cruel world by a mistake. That mistake made my mother and father abandon me in an orphanage. I always hated them for not giving me a name or a warm family. My hatred towards them increased as I grew up. I swore to myself that one day, I would seek them out and proved to them that I could be successful without them.

In my memory, my life in the orphanage was bitter. The other kids always laughed at my face because they said that I was an ugly creature. I was hurt, but there was one boy who always comforted me and never failed to make me laugh. He was there for me every time I needed him. He was the only one I relied on and the one who always listened to my problems.

I told him about my parents and my determination to take my revenge on them, he gave me a soft smile. He said something that made my hatred fade away.

“If I were you, I would not hate them. They took us here because of their mistake or problems, and at least they sent us here. They knew that we would be properly educated and that we would all grow up properly.” He flashed me a smile and I trusted him. Since then, I focused on my studies and was determined to be a better person in future. He always supported me but one day, all of that changed.

An accident happened and took both of his legs away. It changed him tremendously. He was walking at a park when he saw a young lady crying and holding a baby. He felt sorry and approached her. When he asked her about the baby’s father, she ran away and stopped in the middle of the road.

The roar of an engine split the air. A lorry was speeding towards the woman. Adrian quickly ran to the lady and pushed her away so that she could fall into the bushes. He made it, but the tyres of the lorry ran over his legs. He fainted away and the lorry driver sped off. My friend, who had once been a happy and positive man, turned into a sad and depressed young man. I tried to assure him that everything would be okay if he trusted in God. He just weakly nodded his head but I knew that in his heard, he did not believe in anything or anyone anymore. I sternly told him that miracles do happen. Since that day, I read more books on medicine.

Everyday I would go and visit him in his room. Whenever I saw him, he would stare at both of his missing legs, looking sad and gloomy. A few years later, I received a scholarship to further my studies. I was so happy that I went up to him and told him everything. He said that he felt happy for me and gave me a pat on my shoulder.

Time passed in the blink of an eye, I finally became a surgeon. I was determined to show my friend that miracles do happen although it could take up many efforts and time. As time went by, we kept in touch. He always told me about the kids in the orphanage and my mind would dredge up the bittersweet moments I had in there. I did not tell him that I was working on a plan to make a pair or functioning fake legs that could help him regain his life.

I had worked on the special artificial legs for fifteen years but it never felt long as I knew I was going to help those who needed my help. My friend was married, and so was I. my husband knew that I was very determined to change people’s lives. I failed countless times but it made me more spirited. And now, I finally invented them.

I invited my friend and all of his family members to a famous hotel in United Kingdom. I told him that I wanted to repay what he had done for me. He refused at first but after giving him much persuasion, he finally accepted the offer.

The next day, I took him to the surgery room in hospital, and there was the place I spilled the beans

“I am going to make you happy with your life,” I smiled.

“What is it?’ he asked me back

“I’ve invented a pair of functioning fake legs,” I told him the truth.

     He was shocked.

“Are you willing to try them?” I looked at him sincerely.

With no second thought, he agreed. We finished all of the procedure and the operation went well. The doctors and I succeeded in connecting the nerves and all those important parts that could enable him to run or jump.

The operation took six hours, and finally the legs were successfully fitted. With his new legs, he finally took his very first step to attempt standing. Slowly, he stood up. His wife burst into tears and the doctors knew it was a success.

This invention has helped thousands of people in the world. I still remember the moment he stood up, he cried. He then walked towards me and gave me a long hug, saying that he was thankful.

“You are right, Amanda. Miracles do happen!” He cried.

“Yes, miracles do happen, Adrian.” I hugged him back.

I have won several awards and I am thankful for the recognitions. But in the end, the thing that matters to me is the faith of people in miracles. They know that they should not easily give up on their hope and none of us should.
